Waking Up the Night Before

I don't think I'm wired to be a morning person. All of the time I have spent as a working Musician has programmed my body to thrive at night and shut down in the morning. I remember performing until 2am or 3am then traveling home or to the next gig and going to bed at 6am after winding down from a night of work.
Now, I am faced with a job that forces me out of bed at 6:30am (I actually should be up by 6). This just seems to be the night before. As I study the workings of the brain and read various articles on the topic, I learn more and more that teenager function better later in the day. I am bombarded by information that we are all sleep deprived, yet someone, somewhere, with a lot of power insists school starts at 7:30am. This just does not make sense to me.
The solution is often voiced to me as "go to bed earlier". People who are programmed by society to believe this is the way are just past the idea that this is not normal for some of us. I can be exhausted at 8pm or 9pm but just can't fall asleep or I sleep for thirty minutes and am wide awake until 2am. I know I am not the only one in this situation, but for some reason nothing is ever done about it, we just continue to write stories and news reports about how we a all sleep deprived.
My solution is an easy one, start the day later. Why can't we stagger the days to hit the peak teaching time of teachers and learning time of students? If you have the authority to make policy in your school, do something bold and innovative and change your schedule to meet these needs. I bet the overall mood and climate of your school will change with everyone well rested and ready to go. The other option for those of us that hurt in the morning, is to not become teachers. Take you talents and do something else with them that fits your schedule. I imagine this would go against any teacher recruiting programs going on at the moment.
In the end let's stop waking up in the middle of the night so we can get some rest and be safe and healthy.
